Thanks to his agent, Don started to get new jobs besides the Westerncomics he had been doing for some years. In 1960 the editors of the magazine Lion were looking for an artist for their new series. It was written by Henry Kenneth Blumer en was about a likeble viking who fought, supported by some Norwegian Gods agains the unjustice against his vikingfriends. Karl the Viking was the title of this new series and bfrom day one it was a big hit. De series ran from Octobre 1960 till Septembre 1964 en was reprinted for many years.
The writers on Karl the Viking were Henry Bulmer and Michael Moorcock. They were able to get the right atmosphere which they got from the film 'The Vikings' starring Kirk Douglas. Karl looked at little female, probably due to his long hair. Something which was okay for those days but nowadays looks a little sissy. He looked very British. A sort of Biggles with long hair. Not a good mix, Don said.
After four years the editors of Lion wanted to have a new series instead of Karl. They went for a new hero Marco the Mighty whose adventures were written by Michael Moorcock. Don drew Maroc from Octobre 1964 till July 1965 and then he got an offer he couldn't refuse.
