In 2016, participating readers voted the album De Koordenaar van Lucky Luke , a strong homage by Matthieu Bonhomme , as the third best comic of that year. Good news, five years later, in April 2021, a second Lucky Luke album of his hand will be released in French under the title Wanted, Lucky Luke! On the right you see a cover design.

In that story, the cowboy is chased by a bounty hunter. He thereby discovers that there is a price on his head for murder. There is no time to digest the news, because that's when he comes to the rescue of a convoy of livestock led by three sisters in dire circumstances. All three are beautiful ... and intriguing. Gentleman Luke suggests they guide them to their destination. But averse to a hypothetical massacre by Indians, the plundering of the herd and the search warrant, perhaps the greatest danger comes from those three young,

Bonhomme is also the artist of Empress Charlotte, whose first two albums were released in 2019 and 2020. The final part of the trilogy is Bonhomme's next album after his second Lucky Luke story.

Bonelli počinje objavljivat francuze.
Mora bit da je velika kriza...

The relationship between Sergio Bonelli Editore and the rich market of bande dessinée has been consolidated for many decades now; Various publishers publish our comics beyond the Alps and in past years we have presented the best of French adventure comics to the Italian public. Many things have happened in the meantime, but it seemed to us that the time had come to resume a discussion that has never been interrupted.

We are therefore inaugurating a new series dedicated to French comics, where we will present some volumes united by the pleasure of telling the adventure in a new and not obvious way. Let's start with the first of the two volumes of Tenebrosa, premiering at Lucca Comics & Games and in bookstores and comic shops from November 15th.

Magnified by the virtuous stroke of Vincent Mallié, Hubert's screenplay questions the weight of the family heritage, and gives us under the appearances of the fantasy story an intimate reflection on the monsters we carry inside, telling the profound implications of the human soul.

Published in France by Dupuis, Tenebrosa consists of two hardback volumes of 80 pages all in color, in 22x29.7 cm format. In the coming months we will tell you about the other French books we have in the pipeline, all in the name of Adventure and good stories. Reason why, come and visit us in Lucca and continue to follow us on these pages!

Čitao sam prvi album, dalje nisam imao volje. Tango je po meni čisti prosjek, crtež ocjena više.

Valjalo bi pogledati još barem 2 albuma. Ako bude volje.

Later this year, William Vance's hero Bruce J. Hawker will also be back. And Bec is the scriptwriter of that with Carlos Puerta as the artist. The translation of the first album, titled The Eye of the Marsh, is expected at Le Lombard on June 19 in softcover and hardcover. A historian specializing in the history of the British Navy cooperated to serve the seafaring fans at their beck and call. The first new 64-page album has become a treasure hunt in search of the real story behind the legend of the Knights Templar. Bruce J. Hawker is now in command of the Lark. But there are rumours: the sailing ship is supposedly cursed, or is it the captain? In any case, the latter tries not to deny anything and demands that his men follow him to the deepest depths of hell. When the lookout of the Lark sees the sail of an order that disappeared five centuries ago, the question arises whether it is not the devil who is at the helm after all...

“Why classic Franco-Belgian comics aren’t finished yet

Sometimes considered old-fashioned or outdated compared to manga and graphic novels, classic Franco-Belgian comics continue to thrive in bookstores, despite some disregard from the press and the Angoulême festival.

With its stories of pirates or cowboys, archetypal heroes carved in stone, and hyper-realistic aesthetics, classic Franco-Belgian comics may seem somewhat obsolete in today’s world. While a new generation of artists is emerging with a style that blends manga and comics, this ancient way of making comics, often overlooked by the press and the Angoulême festival, still persists.

“When I look at the releases, I see that classic Franco-Belgian comics are never really highlighted, but they still exist,” says the artist Christian de Metter, who recently published “Miroir de nos peines” with Rue de Sèvres, an adaptation of Pierre Lemaitre’s work. “There is always an audience that supports these projects.”

“If one out of every two comics sold in France and Belgium is a manga, this figure needs some nuance,” adds Gauthier Van Meerbeeck, an editor at Le Lombard, the quintessential publisher of Franco-Belgian comics. “Manga, much cheaper than traditional comics, has not yet reached its revenue. While 55% of books sold are manga, they represent only 45% of the comic book industry’s revenue.”

Sales figures in this genre demonstrate its excellent health, going beyond the well-known blockbusters like Astérix and Blake and Mortimer. “Le Convoyeur,” a science fiction story by Dimitri Armand and Tristan Roulot, with its fourth volume just released, has sold over 100,000 copies. “Tango,” a crime novel by Matz and Philippe Xavier, has sold 213,500 copies across its first six volumes (the seventh just released).

Historical epics also perform well, from “Zaroff” by Sylvain Runberg and François Miville-Deschênes (50,000 copies) to “1629” by Xavier Dorison and Thimothée Montaigne (75,000 copies).

Nostalgia is a powerful factor too. “Adieu Aaricia” by Robin Recht, a one-shot of Thorgal, sold 55,000 copies. The special 77th-anniversary issue of Tintin journal, where dozens of authors pay tribute to classic heroes, sold 72,000 copies (56,350 in bookstores and over 15,000 in kiosks). For young readers, “Les Enfants de la résistance” has surpassed 2 million copies.

The big names in the industry paradoxically benefit from the abundance of choices, according to Gauthier Van Meerbeeck: “About ten comics are released every day on average. These volumes are overwhelming for bookstores and, more importantly, for readers. Many less experienced readers gravitate toward what they know, which explains why the audience focuses on successful series.”

For enthusiasts of this genre, these albums, which include titles like “Undertaker” by Xavier Dorison and Ralph Meyer (over 600,000 copies), provide a nostalgic thrill. “When I see a new ‘Tango’ album coming out, I think it’s a real old-school comic, and it makes me happy,” says Matz. “There is an audience for things of good quality, even if they have a classic style.”

The influential Canal BD network, which often highlights these albums in its 150 stores, plays a role in their success. “The Canal BD award has an extremely strong impact,” says Jean-Pierre Nakache, president of the network and owner of the “Bulles en tête” bookstore in Paris. “The western ‘Hoka Hey’ by Neyef, which received the award in January, has just exceeded 100,000 copies sold. That doesn’t happen with any other award!”

Despite this success, there’s still a feeling of being the fifth wheel in the world of comics. Matz sums it up: “There is a cordial contempt for commercially regarded comics. We feel like sellouts and corrupt. We feel like the family’s fools. It’s a subculture. We’re not of interest.”

According to Dimitri Armand, the artist of “Le Convoyeur,” the mainstream press tends to favor independent authors, while specialized magazines more often feature these classic-style comics on their covers. He says, “Many journalists will only read a book if it’s in a particular format. As soon as there’s a large hardcover book that evokes classic Franco-Belgian comics, they won’t go for it. This snobbery touches me because I don’t understand it.”

Xavier Dorison adds, “We’ve discredited all academic training, and it continues to affect traditional Franco-Belgian comics. In art schools, it’s a style even students turn away from.”

However, the French market remains more open to various comic genres compared to the American and Japanese markets. “When you’re a Franco-Belgian comic author, you’re overwhelmed by the open-mindedness of your own country,” says Dimitri Armand. “Journalists only read things that seem groundbreaking or current. They lose interest in what seems old and familiar.”

Amandine Schmitt, who writes about comics for L’Obs, also emphasizes a preference for intimate narratives and small independent publishers: “In essence, everything can interest me. But due to the overproduction - 5,000 comics per year - it’s impossible to cover everything.”

The reading habits have changed as well. Serial series launched in the 1980s eventually became repetitive, leading to a preference for complete stories with recurring heroes, similar to the 1960s. The length of albums has also increased, from 46 pages to 200 pages, as the audience desires more emotions, dialogues, characters, and pages.

Some authors are attracted to this format. Bernard Vrancken, after three decades dedicated to “IR$,” is completing the final volume of his series while publishing “Les Enfants du ciel,” a 280-page war narrative. Many realistic authors still appreciate the classic 46-page format, which remains the most suitable for them, especially for financial reasons.

“The Franco-Belgian comic, if we were to compare it to a car, would be a Rolls Royce,” jests Xavier Dorison. “It must be perfect, but it’s very expensive and takes a long time to create.””
