Man dies alone, amid books
A house fire Tuesday night kills IRS clerk who loved literature and his
comic books; the cause of the blaze is still undetermined

Amid the tiny icicles that clung yesterday to the charred kitchen
cabinets and overturned furniture lay the blackened remnants of Anthony
Podejko's passion.

Piled several haphazard feet high, with torn covers and burnt pages
frozen together, the collection of books, magazines and comics divulged
a life devoted to reading.

But the literary stacks that always comforted the 59-year-old Podejko
became nothing more than fuel when a deadly fire raged through his
Mastic Beach house Tuesday night.

Officials still don't know what caused the fire, which began in the
kitchen of the one-story home about 9 p.m. Podejko, who was found in
the bathroom, was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when he was taken
to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. He
was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m. An autopsy is being performed,
Suffolk Homicide Det. Sgt. Vincent Posillico said, but Podejko's
injuries, including burns and signs of smoke inhalation, are consistent
with a fire.

Podejko's brother Walter and sister-in-law Bernadette, who live next
door to the Cypress Drive home, were asleep when the blaze started, and
woke up to the sound of fire engines after a neighbor called 911.

"I said 'Oh my God, that's my brother's house,'" she said. "I saw his
car and said, 'You gotta get him out of the house, he's in there
somewhere!' They got him out and tried to revive him, but he was gone."

Anthony Podejko, whose nickname was Butch, grew up in the house, his
family said, and graduated from William Floyd High School. He continued
to live there by himself, working for about the past 30 years as a file
clerk for the Internal Revenue Service in Holtsville.

Walter Podejko described his brother as a sweet loner who loved to
immerse himself in reading. He was so fond of literature, Walter said,
that he did not own a phone or television.

"The books were stacked two and a half feet deep on the floor," he
said. "You could have opened up a bookstore with just what was in his
house."

Now Walter and Bernadette are left to clean up the remains of
Podejko's house and sort through the Superman comics and science
fiction novels that he once adored.

"It just kills me," she said, putting her soot-covered hands to her
face to wipe away the tears. "If only they had found him earlier."

In addition to his brother Walter, Podejko leaves behind a mother, two
brothers and two sisters.

ali sa ovakvim zivotom, jebote, i ja bi se htio ubit. ali se nikad ne bi mogao natjerati da spalim i sve to blago, koliko god bio u crnjaku.

Pa, koliko se meni cini, on se nije ubio. I nigde se nije pokazalo da je imao suicidne tendencije.
Ja, inace, zaista razumem ovog lika i oduvek sam zeleo da budem takva vrsta coveka. Mislim, onog koji nema ni tv i telefon, vec samo knjige i stripove, a ne mrtva vrsta coveka.

to je bar lako. prodaj tv i telefon, i kupi knige i stripove. ne vidim u cemu je problem...

Ja sam vec na korak od toga da nemam TV (odnosno, ne palim ga), al' telefona cu se odreci tek kad dobijem kablovski net.

JA uopste nemam telefon kuci,imam samo mobilni.Prije je bio racun od 250 euro mjesecno,sada je 0 euro,yeah that's a lot of stripovi :-))).Cabel je zakon,internet non stop,btw mislim da je klasicni telefon zavrsio,ne treba ti ako imas mobilni...

A sto se tice bacanja TVa ,no way ja volim TV pogotvo sada kad ce digitalni TV da dode,isto kao sto computer ne bi nikada bacio jer volim da igram igrice,isto tako za CD i mp3 players jer ne mogu da zivim bez muzike itd itd.Volim tehnologiju ;-)))!

Zao mi je onog stripadzije ali bolje mu je bilo da je izasao malo iz kuce i bavio se sportom...

Ovo je meni osnov za samoubistvo :) Ne mogu ni zamisliti da nista drugo ne postignem u zivotu osim da sacuvam roditeljsku kucu i upotpunim kolekciju knjiga/stripova (kolika god ona, na kraju, bila). Ali mozda mcn opet postavi kad se sazna razlog pozara...
Sto se tice TVa i telefona, ja idem korak dalje pa mi je nekad pun kurac ljudi uopce ;) kada zavrsim faks,, prvo cu se ispaliti negdje u ove nasse bosanske divlje predjele najmanje 3 mjeseca a vjerovatno i duze, sam sa ruksakom, satorom, nozem i kanafom i tamo odlucit sta dalje sa zivotom.

Magazine Collection Crushes Owner
On Feb 6th a Tokyo man who had amassed a collection of vintage magazines on the second floor of an apartment complex was knocked to ground level and buried when their arrangement was unsettled thus becoming a torent of dried ink and paper, collapsing the floor of the room. Rescuers dug through the massive pile of printed pages for 2 hours before finding him. He was seriously injured, sustaining full body bruises. The 75 year old resident of the 1st floor apartment was uninjured told police the ceiling just seemed to fall in. The Tokyo Fire Department who could only hear the man's voice deep beneath the mountain of magazines used a long probing stick with a miniature camera to find him. The bulk of the collection were old comic magazines such as Shonen Jump, Weekly Playboy and Sunday Mainichi dating back to the mid 1970's. The collection was estimated to be about 50 centimeters in height and about 30 meters in width.

i eto onda kazu 'nemoj drzati stripove gdje ih moze dohvatiti poplava...' mojim nema dalje od zemlje :)
inace su ove japanske kuce poznate po slaboj gradnji, ko kad su japanci mali lagani ljudi pa im i ne trebaju jaki podovi ;) znal se ista za uzrok onog pozara ili sam dobro pogodio?
