"ALASKA! MAXI TEX... ON THE ROCKS! A cannibal god, scary " forest spirits " and a mysterious land and unexplored. Gianmaria Against guide us in these cold and dangerous lands, theater of the adventures of Tex and Carson in the seventeenth Maxi Tex, on newsstands October 5.
A Tex Willer and his tireless pard silver-haired - is well known - the Spirit of the traveler has never been lacking. This is certainly not the first time that the missions of Ranger , or the duties of friendship, led him to the frozen lands that feed the Arctic... So much so that, if my memory does not deceive us, his first foray into Canadian dates back to the episode "the Trap", published at the beginning of the saga texiana, no less than in the fifties. Yet there is always something unusual and tantalizing to see him away from dusty deserts, from the grasslands and saloons that dot the more southern districts of the North American continent. Perhaps because these are the scenes that our collective memory spontaneously associates to the Western classic, Night Eagle genre that has always been the undisputed "testimonial."
Unusual and tasty is, therefore , no doubt that "Alaska", which is, however, as an ideal "sequel" to a Maxi came out some time ago (the number 5, October 2001). Let's talk about that "in the Northwest Territories" which - the most popular amongst you will remember - carried Tex and Carson in the footsteps of his friend Jim Brandon , who died between the snows of British Columbia and suffered a shameful suspicion of desertion. At that time you were also met for the first time Dawn, the brave Indian goddaughter of another historic "shoulder" of the Ranger: the granitic trapper Gros-Jean. Both of these characters will be back on the pages you are about to read, as well as return the menacing atmosphere of mystery that hung in "In the territories of the Northwest." If, then, was the shadow of the legendary Wendigo (sort of man-eating demon, described by different native traditions) to lie on our heroes in this new story will be of no less disturbing "forest spirits" to test their blood cold. Anyway, do not worry: the stainless Tex will, as always, keep balances the nerves intact and its reputation as a wise but implacable avenger, as well as the duo Mauro Boselli & Lito Fernandez will preserve - you'll see it - the prestige earned in many years of comics. From the pen of the first and the pencils of the second output is in fact an Adventure of those who leave their mark, including sailors and Indians, abducted girls and bloody sacrifices along the roughest trails in the shadow of a mountain and a dark black cannibal God...
Tlingit and Tagish are native ethnic groups that do not often meet, at least in the most popular exhibits in the Western film, "classic" or "modern" if you prefer. In the filmography of John Ford, Howard Hawks, John Sturges, Sam Peckinpah or Sergio Leone - just to understand - there's no trace ( unless some work " minor" does not elude stubbornly to our memory and our own research ). .. But , issues of pique philological aside, it is certain that the lack of attention reserved for him from the big screen has always been balanced a strong interest on the part of many scholars and anthropologists. It is no coincidence : for a start, both of these people, like others who live in the north-west regions of the American continent, are repositories of traditional crafts - or artistic - extremely sophisticated, whose achievements never cease to inspire awe and admiration.
Among their best-known wooden artifacts (which Lito Fernandez, in the Maxi Tex, has beautifully reproduced) list, there are those "totem" that imaginary cinema comics are often become true synonyms of "Indian civilization". The name of these strange statues - that the traveler took John Long, in 1791, by the term "odoodem" in Ojibway - Algonquian language - is in fact a product of the figure of speech known as metonymy, which, in this case, use the 'abstract to indicate a concrete object. That totem is in fact a concept, a' "religious idea", present in many tribal civilization, according to which the ancestry, fate and the identity of a group (clan) are inextricably linked to a spiritual entity that manifested in the form of animal, tree, stone, and so on... This deep connection with the natural forces, even the darkest and most threatening, is at the origin of the rich culture and legendary magic of the Tlingit community, whose shamans do sometimes use in their ceremonies, masks of very fine, but the physiognomy not very reassuring. In particular, it is worth mentioning the so-called ghost mask, which - they say - would be haunted by supernatural beings, perhaps by what we call "souls" of the dead. It would be suggestive, although historically imaginative, imagine that there is a link between these objects and those (no less monstrous) worn by the ancient Japanese samurai to terrorize their enemies... We say, why the sailors of the rising sun may have been among the first to come across this population: according to an anecdote of uncertain origin seems that Japan has a junk lapped the Aleutian Islands (the extreme western reaches of the Gulf of Alaska) around the end of the eighteenth century... But not distraiamoci. Magic and legends, we said. Well, it is worth noting that of the moth and the daughter of the chieftain, and somewhat bizarre story "Kafkaesque" (remember "The Metamorphosis"?) Sees a young native nurture and grow a worm until it reaches the length of... an arm ! This heritage of myths and fables is jealously guarded by the people of the Northwest, to the point of having pushed - in 1999 - to self-produce " Kusah Hakwaan", a film that tells the risky adventure of two brothers bound to run Tlingit, giustappunto, in the dreaded Kusah Hakwaan (sort of witch - demon fond of human flesh).
About cannibalism, it would be hard to deny the affinity that binds this story with that of Hamatsa , the giant cannibal god - who also appears in "Alaska". In fact, for anthropologists Hamatsa the above is not the name of a being in itself, but rather to a secret brotherhood that, at the end of the nineteenth century was (maybe) devoted to macabre ritual banquets. The myth on which these men based their practices recalls very closely - we said - to Kusah Hakwaan: Some warriors are lost during a hunting trip, and they are forced to face the terrible giant - eater Bakbakwalanooksiwae in whose house are entered malaguratamente (more or less what happens to Odysseus by Polyphemus). Defeating him, just as Germanic hero Siegfried the dragon Fafnir, the brave hunters will gain magical powers..."
