Rufus & Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody (1983)
Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. As the eldest of five children, the fresh talent quickly acquired a love for rhythm and blues/jazz through the early influence of her grandmother. Early on, Khan believed in fighting the power – even as a young woman she attended various civil rights rallies alongside her father. The idea of striving towards equality was etched deeply within her and, in the 1960s, she joined the Black Panther Party. During her membership, she was given the name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi. Music also played an imperative role in this entertainer’s life. In 1973, Khan joined the epic group known simply as Rufus and immediately took the world by storm! The funk-inspired musicians continually dropped hit after hit including “Sweet Thing“, “Do What You Feel” and “Tell Me Something Good“; however, after years of making iconic jams, Chaka left Rufus and pursued a solo career and her success continued its ascent – remember the soulful gem “Through The Fire“? Yep, that’s her!

This songstress was the definition of fierce! Chaka Khan’s signature pieces included lavish furs, lots of fringe, leather, feathers, sequins and statement tube tops. Aside from her natural beauty, Chaka also uplifted some serious hair – from captivating curls to fluffy ‘fros – this style maven’s bold, bohemian look set the tone for women all over. In addition, Khan was also known to adorn some pretty funky headwear! Her infectious spirit and fashionable fearlessness is what truly allows her to stand out from other icons. Out of all the Vintage Visions featured, Chaka Khan holds a special place within my favorite highlights – the girl was bad!
