Elvis Presley - (You're the) Devil In Disguise (1963)

Elvis Presley racked up a huge collection of #1 hit singles between 1956 and 1963. No song failed to make the Top Ten during this period and any song that
made the Top Ten but fell short of #1 in the US ... and there weren't very many ... went to #1 in the UK. This song, "(You're the) Devil In Disguise," was
Presley's last high-charting single in the US and UK (#3 US and #1 UK in August 1963) until 1969, with the exception of "Crying In The Chapel" which
made it to #1 in 1965.

Despite Beatlemania and the British Invasion, Elvis remained a towering icon as he continued starring in smash box office hits while maintaining a visible
presence on the Top 10 or at least the Top 20 throughout the 1960s ("Kissin' Cousins" at #10, "Viva Las Vegas" at #16, "Ain't That Loving Me" at #13, etc.)
until the "comeback concert" of 1968 propelled him to #1 once again with "Suspicious Minds" in 1969.

This video of "(You're the) Devil In Disguise" is a tribute to both his film and music careers as they were at the height of the hit single's popularity,
featuring photos and film clips of the pop singing legend performing in televised concerts as well as in his movies along with his most famous leading ladies.

Death of the Memphis Monarch

On August 16, 1977 Elvis Presley, the king of rock'n' roll, died. The stunning news swept around the world where he was worshipped by millions of fans.

I was a 13 year old boy riding with a family friend who was negotiating the streets of San Francisco when we heard about the king's death on the radio.
She had to pull over. Her eyes filling with tears.

He had so many fans and yet , after turning "forty and fat", Elvis distanced himself from almost everyone in his life. He died alone in a bathroom in
his 23-room mansion, 14-acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee, called Graceland, and is buried there along with his parents and grandmother.

I visited on winter day in 1995 when I stopped in Memphis on the way to a new job in Colorado. There are messages from fans on the stone wall outside
Graceland. His gravesite adorned with flowers year round and I even caught a photo of a man who still dresses like Elvis.

By then I was enough of a fan to know what I liked about Elvis : his comeback albums Elvis Is Back! (1961) and From Elvis in Memphis (1969); his gospel
album His Hand in Mine (1960) and everything that makes up The Sun Sessions. At his best, Elvis was an incredibly inventive singer, charming, good looking,
sexy, and soulful.

Of course he was not at his best in 1977. On stage he was sweating profusely, his prematurely white hair dyed shoe polish black, carrying around several pounds of
waste that he couldn't defecate without pain, That's why he died on the toilet in the middle of the night.

On the tenth anniversary of Elvis's death , I wandered the streets of Charleston, South Carolina asking people for their memories. "He loved his mama," one
lady said.

"Elvis loved his mama".

Elvis Presley | The first car Elvis owned was a 1942 Lincoln Zephyr coupe, which his
parents bought him for his 18th birthday in January 1956. RCA bought him a brand
new convertible, but fans often defaced it by waiting their names and phone numbers
across the paintwork.

Elvis Presley left a lasting impact on Ann-Margret, says TCM host Ben Mankiewicz

(By Stephanie Nolasco / Published August 16, 2017)

It’s been 40 years since Elvis Presley died at the age of 42, but former co-star
Ann-Margret is still very protective over The King, according to Turner Classic
Movies
host Ben Mankiewicz.

“Ann-Margret does not discuss Elvis and not because she bears him any ill will,”
Mankiewicz told Fox News. “Quite to the contrary, she is very eager to protect Elvis’
legacy and she thinks, correctly, that the media and others... sort of pick away at
his legacy because we’re so desperate for information on him. And I suspect she thinks
his career was mishandled by [manager] Colonel Tom Parker.”

Elvis Presley, Ann Margret - The Lady Loves Me - Viva Las Vegas

Mankiewicz previously interviewed the now-76-year-old actress, who co-starred with Elvis in the
1964 romantic comedy “Viva Las Vegas.” Ann-Margret revealed in her 1994 memoir that she and Presley
had a love affair that ended in 1964 when he believed she spoke with British tabloids, claiming
they planned to marry. He called it quits and since then she avoids discussing the relationship with
the press.

“A read of her autobiography, and she wrote it, makes it pretty clear that they were in love,” said Mankiewicz.
“She doesn't say it in so many words, but she says it in enough words. And they clearly meant a great deal to each other.
They loved each other."

Come On Everybody - Elvis and Ann-Margret

He also added, "It probably couldn’t last. But they had a real meaningful connection with
each other. They understood each other, they both come from small towns, they both loved
motorcycles, and they both were uncomfortable in their spotlight of Hollywood… And I think
that’s what connected them to each other during the duration of Elvis’ life… I think my
understanding of it is we should all be so lucky to have a friendship that’s as meaningful as
the one between Ann-Margret and Elvis Presley.”

Despite the doomed romance, Ann-Margret moved on and married fellow actor Roger Smith
in 1967. It was the same year that Presley married Priscilla Ann Beaulieu, who was 10
year
his junior at age 21. The couple welcomed daughter Lisa Marie in 1968, but would
later divorce in 1973. Ann-Margret’s marriage lasted until Smith’s death this year at age 84.

Elvis Presley - What'd I Say?

“Those 31 movies that he made? None of them lost money. Not one, which is a remarkable record
of consistency," he said. "And speaking of records, the money they made was enhanced massively
because each movie had a record connected to it. And the records, of course, all made a tremendous
amount of money.”

Mankiewicz noted all of Presley’s movies had a similar plot that featured his chart-topping songs.
And because the formula proved to be so successful, it may have limited Presley from taking on more
challenging roles.

Presley’s last movie, “Change of Habit,” would premiere in 1969. Mankiewicz isn’t sure whether Elvis
would have gone on to pursue more success in Hollywood.

“Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese or Peter Bogdanovich, could they have done something
interesting with Elvis Presley? There was a lot that Elvis had to offer and we underestimate him
as a performer… There was just too much talent there.”
