His work bears autobiographical, because Kubert comes as Yossel from Yzeran, eastern Poland, and was already starting very early to draw his surroundings and cartoon characters. In 1926 Kubert emigrate with his family to the United States. So he called Yossel as "a fictional story based on a real nightmare," as "a result of my 'How about gewesen'-thought." Kubert puts himself in the emotional world of the boy and illustrated with sketches Yossels whose life, survival and ultimately death in the Warsaw ghetto. The choice of the coarse pencil stroke Kubert gives his story a great authenticity.
