Devo - Girl U Want (1981) HQ, recorded live




MUNROWS RETRO

From the DEV-O Live EP, this is track three, "Girl U Want."


This EP was a definite crowd pleaser when it appeared in record stores in the late spring of 1981.
"DEV-O Live," consisted of 6 songs and was intended as a promotional package for the later release
of their live album of the same name. As a DJ you rarely, if ever, want to spin an entire album for
a live audience, let alone a 6-song EP. I found the first three tracks more than sufficient for my purposes
and they pretty much did the job I intended them to do, to drive the audience wild for even hotter action.
The truth is, if I had created the EP, these three songs would have been sufficient enough: in sequence:
1."Freedom of Choice Theme Song," 2."Whip It," and 3."Girl U Want."


"Girl U Want" was the unexpected climax of the musical triad. By the end of "Whip It" excited fans
were waiting for anything, but this killer tune with its unusual frenzied beat blindsided most everyone,
stealing the show.


A lot of real retro is in this video with a section of synchronized live Devo footage halfway through.
Although the EP only reached #50 on Billboard, it peaked at #1 for three weeks on Australian record charts in August 1981.
