Showing him what he's missing? Nina Dobrev dons leather to do her best sexy librarian impression as ex Ian Somerhalder moves on

By CHELSEA WHITE

She may have lost her boyfriend to another vampire, but Nina Dobrev is not letting that get her down.

The 25-year-old was far too busy looking good to be worried about her ex Ian Somerhalder dating Nikki Reed.

Stepping out at Comic-Con in San Diego, California, on Friday night, the Vampire Diaries star ensured all eyes were on her.

(Nina Dobrev wore a sexy ensemble to Comic-Con in San Diego, California, on Friday)

Embracing the nerdy past of the convention, Nina did her best impression of a sexy librarian at the 20th Century Fox panel.

Promoting her new film Let's be Cops, the brunette donned a striking purple pleated leather skirt with a sheer white tuxedo shirt tucking into the high-waisted statement piece.

The star avoided any wardrobe malfunctions in the see through shirt thanks to a nude top underneath.

Aguila Solitaria

Comic Mexico

Retrospace says:

Aguila Solitaria was a Mexican superhero that flies using artificial wings, is a marksman akin to Green Arrow, and knows ‘the secrets of the eagles’.
(As a side note, he’s also a big time stud). And of course, his parents were killed by filthy gringos.

These villains certainly are interesting: stereotypical Indians - but with gorilla heads. I can’t decide if they’re cool or unbelievably lame. And what’s with
the “Guba!” I can’t take them seriously as bad guys if they’re going to spouting such things. I’ve seen GUBA as an acronym for “good, ugly, bad and awesome”
and according to Wikipedia, it’s also a prehistoric Hungarian coat.

It’s interesting to note that in Spanish language comics, cowboys are quite often murdering rapists, whilst the Indians are the good ones. A complete reversal
from their American counterparts. Don’t expect to find Roy Rogers, Gene Autrry or the Lone Ranger in these comics!“

Bettie Page Tribute

Bettie Page Tribute Shows the Rebellious Spirit Behind the Woman

Michael L. Frizell – Writer
Ernesto Lovera – Penciler
Maria Santaolalla – Colorist
Gary Scott Beatty – Letterer
Rob Aragon – Cover

I’m taking time out today to read and review Bettie Page Tribute by Bluewater Comics. Bettie Page was not just a pinup model. She is seen as not only a provocateur
but also a fundamental figure for a rebellious spirit that is still present today. In this latest biographical account presents itself in the form of a graphic novel, maybe in an effort for a wider audience to
understand her appeal beyond the sexy pinup pictures that one can now see on t-shirts and dorm room posters. It quickly runs through her introduction into the world of pinup photography to her most controversial work,
the fetish work she is so well known for as well as the soon to follow controversy of that work. The novel ends with a tongue and cheek deflection on her later years.

For the uninitiated, this might be a place to start. As I stated above, the novel quickly runs through the most exciting aspects of Bettie’s life. It provides enough information to plant
the seeds that will lead to the discovery of a more fascinating story. For those who are more familiar with her and the work she stared in, this will seem like the drawn version of the introduction
article on her Wikipedia page. It presents the most simplistic story line of her life. I was disappointed that the book did not explore in more detail her relationship with the Klaws and the ensuing
fallout during and after the congressional hearings. It also missed an opportunity to discuss her as a person, as Bunny Yeager. In this telling, she remained as one dimensional as her image
on those t-shirts and dorm room posters mentioned earlier. Bettie Page is probably the perfect person to have their store told in a graphic novel format considering her impact and importance
for the normalization of traditionally subversive imagery. To this reader, it felt that this was created to add just another piece of profit generating product on a popular pop culture figure.
The artwork was as technically limited as the story itself which was another disappointment but not a surprise. If felt just as rushed and one dimensional as the story missing the opportunity to utilize
the high vibrancy and artistry that is present in comics today to flesh out a simplistic story line.

This book does not tell us about Bettie Page or Bunny Yeager. It tells the story of the image of Bettie Page. It does it in such a flat an mundane way that it adds
nothing to the lexicon of work on or about her and is unlikely to drive the uninitiated to learn more as it lacks any depth that would lead the reader to continue to look. Bettie’s image has been infused
in hundreds of books and movies, quite a few of them which do a better job at telling the image of both her and her image. I challenge one to explore those and live this one at the store.

ADVENTURES IN FEMINISTORY: WOMEN'S COMICS OF THE '70S AND '80S

by Kjerstin Johnson

When most people think of underground and alternative comics, Robert Crumb's Zap Comix or Art Spiegelman's and Bill Griffith's Raw may come to mind.
But San Francisco was home to more than a few alternative cartoonists, and when women such as Trina Robbins found out what a boy's club the
underground scene seemed to be, they took matters into their own hands and published a collectively edited women-only comic book.

"It Ain't Me, Babe" was published in 1970 and was the the first ever comic book composed entirely of women, and while it remained a single comic
and not a series, it was the impetus to start the series Wimmen's Comix, which debuted in 1972, and would continue until 1992.

...

(The crew of It Ain't Me, Babe, 1970.
From left to right, sitting: Trina Robbins, Lisa Lyons.
Standing: Carole, Peggy, Michele Brand Wrightson, Willy Mendes.
In ovals: Meredith Kurtzman and Hurricane Nancy Kalish.)

The comic was run as a collective, or as Terry Richards, one of the founders, says more precisely, "We decided that we would produce an on-going title
of comics by women and that we would function as a collective, a term used rather loosely in those days to mean there would be no leader or editor,
but instead a rotating editorship, with everyone contributing their energy to the paperwork and general supportiveness of the group."

The women of Wimmen's Comix, 1975. Left to right, standing: Becky Wilson, Trina Robbins, Shelby
Sampson, Ron Turner (publisher), Barb Brown, Dot Bucher. Sitting: Melinda Gebbie, Lee Marrs
.

The content of Wimmen's Comix dealt with feminist issues such as sexism and abortion, and when Roberta Gregory came aboard, lesbianism.
But as Lee Marrs (creator of Pudge, Girl Blimp) said "We would try for artistic quality, story coherence, although so many of us were beginners.
There was to be no feminist line, no theme restrictions. The deal was for everyone to do what turned them on or pissed them off. We wanted to show women
as they really are."

...

Lee Marrs' work

In addition to Robbins and Marrs, contributors included Trina Robbins, Michelle Brand,
Lora Fountain, Aline Kominsky,
Diane Noomin, Lee Marrs, Pat Moodian, Sharon Rudahl (author of the 2007 Graphic Biography of Emma Goldman),
Karen Marie Haskell, Shelby Sampson and Janet Wolfe Stanley. Later contributors included Melinda Gebbie, Penny Van Horn, Carol Tyler, Chris Powers,
Carol Lay, Mary Fleener, M. K. Brown, Dot Bucher, Lee Binswanger Dori Seda, Terry Boyce, Kathryn LeMieux, Caryn Leschen and Phoebe Gloeckner.

Twisted Sisters issue #1, cover by Aline Kominsky

Although the comic ran for twenty years, only seventeen issues were produced in that time period (browse covers here!). However, the advent of all-women published
comics inspired publications to come. Dyke Shorts, Tits & Clits (started by Joyce Farmer and Lyn Chevli), and Twisted Sisters all emerged.
You could find the same network of women comic artists contributing to several of the series too!
