Country Joe and the Fish - Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine (1967) HQ
MUNROWS RETRO
"Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine" is a popular "underground" track off the band's groundbreaking 1967 psychedelic album, Electric Music for the Mind and Body. I first heard it on FM radio in 1969 and it quickly became a big favorite of mine. In many respects I like this music better than the famous Fish cheer song "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag" that "Country" Joe McDonald performed at Woodstock and the band's more popular "Rock and Soul Music" (parts 1 & 2) ... which is, nevertheless, a really great tune. The songs off Electric Music for the Mind and Body are not exactly the kind you would have ever imagined being turned into full action music videos.
I am rather pleased with the way my interpretation of "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine" turned out as it was such a huge challenge to do. It is a dark song, but with an element of humor as "Country" Joe's character indicts and critiques Martha's intellectual and literary posing, her gothic tastes and dress (long before there was such a thing as "goth"), and her huge, relentless obsession with Death ... in particular, his own!
