Bobby Helms - You are my special Angel (1957)

(Bobby Helms With Wife Dori In Germany)

Bobby Helms - My Special Angel (1957) HQ

MUNROWS RETRO

This is a true 50's classic by the late great Bobby Helms. I remember this as an often-played
jukebox favorite well into the early/middle 1970s, especially around the Christmas season when
his other big song, "Jingle Bell Rock," also got played. It's one of those tunes you just want to sing
along with from a simpler and happier time.

The Poni-Tails - Born Too Late (1958)

TheLimePopsicle

Truly one of the best records of the '50's, this recording was one of those responsible for making
me fall in love with the music of the era. If the beauty and innocence of the decade could be
captured in a song, it would be this one. A classic sung by one of the best, and most under-rated
girl groups. The girls were 19 at the time of this recording. The theme of the song is as pertinent
today as it was at the time. As one of the Poni-Tails, Patti McCabe, explained in Billboard at the
time, "It's a message song. Lots of girls fall in love with an older guy. It's like the junior high school
girl who secretly loves the senior who's the football captain. Or the high school girl whose boy is
away in college. "Born Too Late" gets very close to home with a lot of girls for that reason".

Certainly a timeless song with a universal theme.

Charted at #7 on Billboard Hot 100 in August 1958, #5 on UK Singles chart, and #11 on Billboard R&B chart.

Original Billboard review: "The gals turn in a tender performance on this pretty ballad. The side
has a strong message for teens and could easily catch on."

Written by Fred Tobias and Charles Strouse. Arranged by O.B. Masingill.

The first copies of the single spell the group's name, "The Pony-Tails".

The other side of this single, the uptempo "Come On Joey Dance with Me" was originally conceived
to be the A-side. You can also hear it on this channel, as well as two remakes of "Born Too Late"
by Jill Jackson (Paula from Paul and Paula) and the Shannons.

(Those present, back row, from the left: Adam Faith, Sylvia Sands, Vince Eager.
The others: Danny Williams, Bob Miller, The Poni-Tails, John Barry, Stewart Morris)

MARTHA ROSLER

Playboy (On View) from the series House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home, in Vietnam

Rosler conceived Bringing the War Home during a time of increased intervention in Vietnam by the United States military.
Splicing together pictures of Vietnamese citizens maimed in the war, published in Life magazine, with images of the homes
of affluent Americans culled from the pages of House Beautiful, Rosler made literal the description of the conflict as the
"living-room war," so called in the USA because the news of ongoing carnage in Southeast Asia filtered into tranquil American
homes through television reports. By urging viewers to reconsider the "here" and "there" of the world picture, these activist
photomontages reveal the extent to which a collective experience of war is shaped by media images.

Yayoi Kusama – Obsessed with Polka Dots (DOKU)

Tate

The nine decades of artist Yayoi Kusama’s life have taken her from rural Japan to the New York art
scene to contemporary Tokyo, in a career in which she has continuously innovated and re-invented
her style.

Well-known for her repeating dot patterns, her art encompasses an astonishing variety of media,
including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance and immersive installation. It ranges from
works on paper featuring intense semi-abstract imagery, to soft sculpture known as ‘Accumulations’,
to her ‘Infinity Net’ paintings, made up of carefully repeated arcs of paint built up into large patterns.

Since 1977 Kusama has lived voluntarily in a psychiatric institution, and much of her work has been
marked with obsessiveness and a desire to escape from psychological trauma. In an attempt to share
her experiences, she creates installations that immerse the viewer in her obsessive vision of endless
dots and nets or infinitely mirrored space.

At the centre of the art world in the 1960s, she came into contact with artists including Donald Judd,
Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell and Claes Oldenburg, influencing many along the way. She has traded
on her identity as an ‘outsider’ in many contexts – as a female artist in a male-dominated society,
as a Japanese person in the Western art world, and as a victim of her own neurotic and obsessional
symptoms.

After achieving fame and notoriety with groundbreaking art happenings and events, she returned to
her country of birth and is now Japan’s most prominent contemporary artist.

Golden Earing ~ Radar Love (extended) 1973

olaboga13

Album: Moontan
Released: 1973
Recorded: Trident Studios, London
Music & Lyrics: George Kooymans/Barry Hay

"Radar Love" is a song by the Dutch rock band Golden Earring. The single version of "Radar Love"
reached #10 on the Cash Box Top 100 and #13 in Billboard in the United States. It also hit the
Top 10 in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Spain.
The subject of the song is the point of view of an automobile driver who drives to his lover ("baby")
and communicates with her without physical means such as telephone or letters. On his radio, he
hears Brenda Lee's "Coming on Strong", and the newsman "singin' his same song".

Golden Earring is a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as the Golden Earrings (the "s" was dropped in 1969).
They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs "Radar Love" in 1973, which went to number one on the
Dutch charts, reached the top ten in the UK and went to number thirteen on the American charts,"Twilight Zone" in 1982,
and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984. During their career they had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts; over the
years they produced 25 studio albums. The band's lineup currently consists of co-founders Rinus Gerritsen (bass and keyboards)
and George Kooymans (vocals and guitar), along with Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute and saxophone), and Cesar Zuiderwijk
(drums and percussion). All musicians in the present lineup of the band have been continuous members of the band since 1970,
although other musicians have joined and left the band during the intervening years.
