Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Rare Joan Baez-Bob Dylan photo revealed

(Kathy Willens/Miami News)

With Joan Baez being inducted Friday into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we unearthed this unusual Baez photo from our archives for a
Throwback Thursday item. Baez is usually thought of as being a serious activist with an angelic voice.

But this photo shot by Kathy Willens of the defunct Miami News shows an earthier, playful side of the folk legend. She is sticking out her
tongue at somebody while on stage with two other Rock Hall inductees — Bob Dylan and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds
— during Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue in Gainesville in 1976.

As far as the fashions on stage, all we can say is “It was the ’70s, man.”

THE DAY BOB DYLAN WAS CAUGHT BOXING IN MEXICO CITY

A protest singer, a cut-up poet, a one-time beatnik – always the next generation of music; that was Bob Dylan.

And though many of us have tried to get to the bottom of his story, like all good music fans, we know that Bob Dylan was more than a sensational voice
of the 1960s. His second book, Chronicles, was an autobiography. It tells some of the story of Dylan’s encounter with boxing. This was due to an
unexpected meeting with the boxer Jack Dempsey. It was a meeting described by Lou Levy, the sophisticated music editor who later published
the Dylan songbook. Dempsey, according to Levy, at first confused Dylan with a boxer who hadn’t reached heavyweight status. Nevertheless,
he shared some valuable advice during the meeting: “never be afraid to hit someone with tremendous force.”

Eventually, Levy corrected Dempsey, explaining that Dylan is not a boxer, but a singer. In fact, he was always both. Dylan had practiced boxing while at
school and on several occasions he mentioned that it was his favorite pastime. It was, after all, a sport that required no teams, similar to his career
as a songwriter.

Another peculiar episode of Dylan’s discreet career as a boxer took place in Mexico City in 2008, during a part of his tour that year.
The newspaper El Universal spoke with several patrons present at the Gymnasio Nuevo Jordan, in a dogeared corner of the city’s Centro Histórico.
These witnesses held that Dylan arrived at about two p.m., accompanied by three other persons.
They paid $50 pesos each, trained for one hour, showered and left.

Apparently, not many patrons recognized him. “I thought to myself, the oldsters here are going to have a heart attack,” coach Rodolfo “Güerco” Rodriguez
recalled of the incident. He was fortunate enough to have orchestrated that mythical training. He added: “He went to box one round with each of his friends and he
did well. It is was apparent he’d been practicing boxing for some time because he had good loose blows and they brought ear protectors and professional gloves.
He understands pugilism and he enjoys it.”

(Bob Dylan and Muhammad Ali)

Dylan’s relationship with boxing has led to more than a few songs on the topic. To name a few, “Hurricane“, dedicated to Rubin Carter,
“Who Killed Davey Moore?” and “I Shall Be Free,” which is about Muhammad Ali. Each of these songs contains a clear message of protest, though of
course, listening to any one of them is a far better way to understand its rather frank denunciation.

It’s actually well known that Bob Dylan regularly devotes a few hours a week to boxing at a gym in Santa Monica. Though the mythical fight in Mexico City
was reported by a few witnesses, most of the tour visit was dedicated to the concert and all that goes into getting one off the ground.

Bob Dylan - Hurricane (1975)

Bob Dylan - Who Killed Davey Moore (Fight Video and Lyrics)

Bob Dylan is a great poet in the tradition of English of William Blake,” Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy
said with regard to his award of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Though it is not entirely necessary to possess any special intuition to recognize him as a
truly great writer, it’s pleasant to understand him as an epic fighter, too.

Accompanied by his preferred Fender guitar, it can also be said that Dylan has fought for things that really matter.
In his own words, “the purpose of art is to stop time.”
