Myrna Darby
She was discovered by Mr. Ziegfeld at the age of 17, in the little town of Connelsville, Pennsylvania.
BURLESQUE MYRNA DARBY died Sept, 27,1929 at the age of 21. The Doctor said she died of extreme sunburn and strenuous swimming. Flo Ziegfeld of the Ziegfeld Follies which Darby belonged said she had a bad heart for 6 months but others said she died of a broken heart after a break up to a Millionaire..
Actress. Born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, she was said to be one of the most beautiful girls ever to appear in the Ziegfeld Follies. A blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty, she was discovered while performing in Pittsburgh at age 17 by Florenz Ziegfeld himself. She appeared in productions of "No Foolin'", "Whoopee", "Rio Rita", "Rosalie", "The Three Musketeers", and "Follies". In 1927 she posed for a Lucky Strike cigarette advertisement with fellow Ziegfeld Girls Murrell Finley, Blanche Satchell and Jean Ackerman. While working, Myrna would bring homemade cookies to others on set, and showed kindness to all she encountered. She had many admirers, though in a melancholic twist not one of them attended her funeral. Her Broadway acquaintances slept too late that day, and were all predisposed to attend to her in illness. Her hospital bills were paid by an anonymous donor, later found to be Mr. Larry Fay, a New York nightclub owner who barely knew her. He'd only met her once, but described her as the sweetest and prettiest girl he'd ever met. Rumors surrounding her death guessed that she may have died of heartbreak, her engagement to a fur baron having been recently canceled. Another theory implied a sunstroke-induced heart infection, having received a severe sunburn while touring Europe. She died in New York City, at age 21.

LONDON
Warren Zevon - Werewolves Of London (1978) HQ
MUNROWS RETRO
No, not during the Halloween season but the first flush of lovely spring did this masterpiece by Warren Zevon make the rounds on the airwaves. It also became a frequently requested song where I was spinning records. An interesting note here I never knew about: drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie of Fleetwood Mac were in on the recording of this song. The song entered the US charts on April 22, 1978 ... which is about the time the music began to really change for the last time in the 70's. It was a great spring and summer that year, and "Werewolves Of London" had fabulous company in the record stores by other acts like Meat Loaf, Gerry Rafferty, Abba, Bonnie Tyler, Patti Smith Group, Bob Seger, George Benson, Billy Joel, Sweet, Jefferson Starship, Plastic Bertrand, Spyro Gyra, The Cars and so many other truly great bands and artists. Although Warren Zevon would have several other hits (not to mention hits he wrote for other people), this would be the song he would be best remembered for. Zevon's werewolf was a cut above the rest as he was well-dressed ("I'd like to meet his tailor") and "his hair was perfect." Thus, I do the best I can in this video to render his vision of a dapper but violent "hairy-handed gent" walking about the streets and pubs of London cinematically (to do a 100% job would be impossible, however).
"Werewolves Of London" peaked rather unceremoniously at #21 on Billboard's Hot 100 on May 13, 1978. However, on Cash Box it reached #15 for two weeks on that same day. For those of you in a celebratory mood, I hope you all have a howling good time!
The Turtles - She'd Rather Be With Me (1967) HQ
Sunshine Pop. Well, that's what they call it these days, although I don't recall hearing that term back in the 60's. Here's a couple of my favorite sunshine pop songs from 1967, this one is the brilliant follow-up to "Happy Together." Peaking at #3 on Billboard, #2 on Cash Box, #1 in Canada, and #4 in the UK from the week ending June 24th into early July ... from the Summer of 1967, it's "She'd Rather Be With Me" by The Turtles. |
