A surprise hit for the spring and summer of 1969 ... released in October 1968 by Jamaican singer Desmond Dekker, the single was the first UK reggae number one and among the first to reach the US top ten. Most of us in the US had never heard of reggae yet and the sound was strange, yet the tune seemed oddly familiar with the lower register harmonizing vocals during each chorus reminiscent of those heard in early 60's pop rock 'n roll songs. That aspect of it made it sound a bit out of time and had many of us thinking we were hearing an early 60's "golden oldie" we had somehow forgotten. It was hugely popular all the same, a catchy song with elusive lyrics that were difficult to understand except here and there. Despite "Israelites" being recorded and released in 1968, the Uni 45 discography shows its cataloguing in 1969. It debuted in the UK in March 1969 and soared to #1 for one week. It also reached #1 in Netherlands, Jamaica, South Africa, Canada, Sweden and Germany. In the US it debuted on the singles charts in May, reaching #9 on Billboard and #8 on Cash Box on July 5, 1969 (CB date). Very danceable, if you know how to dance to it ... and the young lady in this video appears to know just how, with a little help from Korla Pandit on ghost organ.
Another big favorite of mine from the great Gene Pitney, the second video of his songs I've done since "Town Without Pity" last year. Originally written for Neil Sedaka to record, "It Hurts To Be In Love" was Gene's first MAJOR Beatles-era smash hit. Released in July 1964, it soared to #2 in Canada and to #7 in the US on both Billboard's Hot 100 and the Cash Box Top 100 on October 10, 1964 (CB Date).

David Cassidy posed naked ( for photographer Annie Leibovitz) and revealed his drug use in the May 11th, 1972 issue of Rolling Stone. "The Business of David Cassidy" - - which at that point included a Top Ten version of "Cherish" and a hit TV show called "The Partridge Family "-- would never be the same.
It pissed off everybody that was really profiting from the business of David Cassidy. I had fan letters that came to me--and there were hundreds of thousands of them, literally-- in defense of me by fans of mine, that said, "Oh David, I know that you couldn't possibly have done this because I know that you would never have posed nude for photographs", And the fact was, I had, willingly done so, had thought about it. I scratched my head and thought, you know, this David Cassidy business has really gotten outta hand. ~ David Cassidy

Ellen Weston made three memorable appearances as Dr Steele in the 3rd season of Get Smart. Dr Steele was every male scientists dream lab partner. Her cover as a dancing showgirl allowed Ellen to show off her fantastic physical attributes, much like Seven of Nine in Star Trek Voyager. Sadly she only showed up in 3 shows, but it would have been fitting if they had spun her off into her own series, with maybe Heimie the robot as her partner.
