Iron Butterfly - In The Time Of Our Lives (1969) HQ
MUNROWS RETRO
Iron Butterfly's album, Ball, released in January 1969, was, for the most part, more uplifting and upbeat than their previous LP, despite a few tongue-in-cheek scare songs. "Lonely Boy" was sad and bluesy with a stunningly beautiful lead guitar part by the late Erik Brann which sounded like it might have been appropriate to be played on the TV series Star Trek, then in its final season. Most of the tracks were not only instant FM favorites, but some were even getting played late at night on AM radio as well. The first track on side one, however, was so dark and disturbing that some even have gone so far as to type it musically as "nightmarish" and lyrically as "morbid." That track, "In The Time Of Our Lives," ironically, was possibly one of the best on the entire album and much more true to the band's "heavy" image. It accomplishes in just under five minutes what took an entire side of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida to do and remains one of my favorite alternative Iron Butterfly tracks (alternative to the said major hit from 1968). The song is largely about our collective mortality, past and present, and questions the concept of a final judgment. I consider it a deep cut despite its "peaking" at #96 on Billboard's Hot 100. "Soul Experience" did somewhat better at #75. Songs with more mature themes like "In The Time Of Our Lives" would be more plentiful in their Metamorphosis album released in 1970, which contained tracks such as "Soldier in Our Town" and "Slower Than Guns." The potential cinematic value of this first track on Ball was never lost to me, although at age 15 any visual concept would have been quite abstract. That is no longer the case.

LEIF GARRET - I WAS MADE FOR DANCING (live TV performance, 1979)

I Traveled The World With Leif Garrett
I traveled the world with Leif Garrett. He was the biggest star on the planet earth and one of the most carring and humble persons I have ever met. One day, when we got back from Tokyo, Leif called me and asked what I was doing. "Nothing", I said. "Good" be reported. "Get over to my house right away... I have a new girlfriend and bring your camera". I will never forget that call or that day. The girlfriend was a young model named Nicolette Adams soon to be Nicolette Sheridan. She wanted to dress for the photos, but I insisted that she do nothing of the sort. The photos ran on covers of magazines all over Eurppe and Japan. People magazine ran a shot too. I have not seen Leif in a few years. I wish him the best always.
