An the village of Goëm, in the bay of Sprague, the population has been observing abnormal manifestations for several months: the second moon has disappeared, and no one has found an explanation for it. And, more seriously, the sea gradually receded... until it disappeared completely. In a place outside our geography and our history (the Lowlands, in Sprague Bay), the sea has disappeared. The village drawing all its resources from the sea (fishing, breeding, crops) seems doomed to die. In desperation, the villagers sent two expeditions to cross the desert, understand what was happening and perhaps bring water back to the village: they did not return and never heard from them. This nostalgic routine is turned upside down the day a strange giant crustacean washes up on the beach. Legends and gossip come to life on the shore! The assumptions are going well and a specialist from the city arrives on the spot to check the situation. This is where things start to get complicated: the beast is still alive and carries within it a messenger from the open sea...
Even if they have developed very different universes throughout their respective careers, Benoît Sokal and François Schuiten have never lost sight of each other since their joint studies at the Saint-Luc school in Brussels. In Aquarica , they offer an imposing maritime narrative flirting with fantasy. The screenplay, seemingly very simple, is nourished by the classics of the genre ( Moby Dick, the myth of Jonas, etc.) to which the authors have injected a completely contemporary ecological subtext. Still embryonic at this stage, the plot remains rich in gray areas and it is the characters who focus all the attention. The incredible past of the heroine, the revanchist and altogether understandable motivations of Baltimore and his crew, the candid Greyford and, globally, all the other inhabitants of the port are described with great precision. Very well constructed, this long introduction stretches throughout seventy dense pages and now demands a sequel to match the care given to these detailed premises.
Logically more in the vein of Kraa than Canardo, the drawings and sumptuous coloring of Sokal are impressive. Facing men, the sea, this unknown, is constantly threatening. Faces are devoured by the salt spray, joints gnawed by humidity and minds blinded by the immensity of the horizon. Only wildlife, dolphins and gulls know how to play with the elements to glide and glide between the murderous blades. Perhaps too caricatural at times, the line is nevertheless extremely sharp and allows the artist to create an atmosphere worthy of the great hours of naval literature.

Jean-Claude Mézières died on January 23, 2022 . He'd already stopped drawing new Ravian stories by then, but the series didn't end there. In recent years, one-shots by other authors have been published in dribs and drabs. Shingouzlooz Inc. was a fruitful collaboration between Mathieu Lauffray and Wilfrid Lupano , while Manu Larcenet took a comical tack for Het Armor van de Jakolass . This year a third album will be added, signed by Virginie Augustin ( Alim de Leerlooier , 40 Elephants , Had Meneer Nog Gewenst?) from a screenplay by none other than Pierre Christin , the screenwriter of the main series Ravian . The French version of the 56-page album will already be released in September on Dargaud .
