The Animals - The House Of The Rising Sun (1964) HQ

MUNROWS RETRO

Everyone knows the first major event of The British Invasion was the historic February 9, 1964 Ed Sullivan show where The Beatles played an opening
and closing set of their hits, some already on the charts of the US since January and in Canada since December 1963. They would appear again the next
two Sunday nights with opening and closing sets.

But who remembers the second? It was, of course, the first major international #1 hit single by a British band other than The Beatles: The Animals.
The song was "The House Of The Rising Sun," based on an old American folk song itself traced to several similar ballads sung in 16th and 17th Century
England where "Rising Sun" was used as the name of a house of prostitution.

In some versions the hapless singer is a girl trapped forever in the oldest profession, and in others a man who contracts a venereal disease at a bawdy house
and lies dying, bewailing the fact that had he known what was wrong with him in time he would have treated himself with mercury. As the song progressed
through the 20th Century it generally indicates a man or woman hopelessly addicted to their respective lifestyles revolving around a New Orleans brothel called
The Rising Sun.

For me the story sounded eerily familiar to the 1962 film, Walk On The Wild Side ... parts of which are featured in the video, along with a few other films with
related themes and scenes.

In The Animals' version the verses are supposedly changed to a tale about a man whose father was a gambler and drunkard, the "house" now presumably a
gambling house. Still, the lyrics are general enough and make no direct mention to a gambling house, only to say that the man is a gambler. Gamblers were
often known to frequent houses of prostitution, some which also were gambling casinos, which gives us a man hopelessly in love with a prostitute and forever
ensnared by gambling and alcohol addictions as well. At least that's how it seems to me, quite like the film I mentioned.

The single was released in June 1964 in the UK and August 1964 in the US. It reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart on July 1, 1964 and #1 in the US on both
the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts on September 5, 1964. It remained #1 on both US charts for three consecutive weeks. It also soared to #1
on RPM Magazine in Canada.

It is considered by most rock historians as the first folk rock hit.

Have You Ever Been To The House Of The Rising Sun?

Home:
https://www.theodysseyonline.com/have-you-ever-been-to-the-house-of-the-rising-sun

This popular ballad actually has it's origins from the 1500s. The song was and still is about
a brothel. The said brothel was set in London and was first about only a man who spent most
of his time in The Rising Sun brothel where he contracted venerial disease. Centuries later the
song was changed and the new setting of this brothel was the new Sin City of the New World,
New Orleans. If you think about it, New Orleans is a perfect setting for this song. The city is
known for its decadence and the dangerous French Quarter which at the time was a bad place
to be as people went missing or found murdered for their money from gambling.

The House of the Rising Sun

The House of the Rising Sun” is a traditional folk song about a life gone wrong in New Orleans. It was first recorded in 1937 under the title ”The Rising Sun Blues”
and later made famous in 1964 by the new version of the Animals. Country singer Dolly Parton sang it as well as many others and it became a hit in the United
Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, Finland, and Canada.

Was the House of the Rising Sun a brothel? A tuberculosis hospital? Slave quarters on a plantation? A chain gang? An antebellum syphilis clinic for prostitutes?
(Really, that’s an actual theory!) The lyrics have been changed so much over the years, it’s really hard to tell.

A reform school or a prison is the best bet according to the lyrics and the wailing of the music, but the House of the Setting Sun might have been a better
choice of words as the Rising Sun usually has an uplifting connotation.

So I decided that creating the House of the Rising Sun should be about a House not in New Orleans but anywhere in the world where humanity and the legacy
of Dickens, Fry and Abe could prevail.

The Real House of the Rising Sun should be a place for prison reform and restorative justice for all.

The Ventures - Walk, Don't Run (1960) H

MUNROWS RETRO

It is rare that I quote more than a sentence or two of Wikipedia, if at all, but some of the information in the first three paragraphs
of the "Walk, Don't Run" article really says about as much or more than I might be inclined to say as an opening comment on the
background of this song:

"Walk, Don't Run" is an instrumental composition written and first recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954 ... After hearing a
Chet Atkins recording of "Walk, Don't Run", the Tacoma-based instrumental rock band the Ventures released their version of the tune
as a single in spring 1960 on Dolton Records. This version made the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #2 and reaching #3 on the Cash Box
magazine chart for five weeks in August and September 1960 ...

This single, their first national release, vaulted the Ventures' career ... Bob Bogle played the lead guitar part on this first Ventures recording
of the song. The band would later rerecord the song in 1964, and would become the first band to score two top ten hits with two versions of
the same song."

Now for MY comments. I love this original version, and Bob Bogle's expert use of the vibrato bar may be one of the best ever done.
I will say this, the late John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service is the only other lead guitar player I have ever heard who could
use the vibrato bar in the strategic manner it was INTENDED to be used. So many kids I knew growing up on rock music and playing lead
guitar overused the vibrato bar and always in the wrong places. I can't help but to think that Cipollini was both impressed and influenced by
Bogle's professional and polished playing of "Walk, Don't Run" (1960 version). As a result, I can't listen to some of Quicksilver's best music
without also thinking of this one truly great Ventures tune.

I don't know how many of you remember this but the band also released a "Play Along With The Ventures" album and an instruction booklet
showing where to place your fingers on the frets on each song to learn how to play lead guitar. It was one of the ways I learned how. As for the
popularity of neighborhood bands playing Ventures music, I can only say that in the early 60's and into '64, on spring and summer days the girls
would be sitting on stairs of porches and out in the lawn just eating up all the guitar playing. Between listening to and watching Ricky Nelson playing
on "The Adventures of Ozzie And Harriet" and these local bands playing for throngs of mostly young, cheering females, it is little wonder so many of
us wanted to form our own rock bands when we got older.
