The fantasy series The Mercenary is currently being released in a new guise at Arboris. Parts 7 and 8 were released in April. We knew that Vicente Segrelles was now working on a closing album. And that is now a fact in Spanish and German.
The Mercenary Volume 14, entitled The Last Day, is not a classic comic, but for the most part an illustrated album-sized novel, supplemented by a short ten-page comic entitled The Evidence.
The album is composed with notes and images of the now eighty-year-old Segrelles, including twenty-four full-page illustrations. Together they tell what happened to villain Claust, the fate of the Order of the Crater and of course what the role of the nameless Mercenary is in all of this. |

Bilo je svojedobno nekih najava za integrale Najamnika kod nas, ali nikad nista nije bilo od toga. Šteta. Rado bi gledao te lijepe sličice pune golotinje i zmajeva 
Čini se nevjerovatnim da to jos i danas izlazi. Izgleda kao relikt nekog davnog, boljeg vremena. Vremena kad je svijet još bio mlad, kad su se stripovi bavili samo najvažnijim stvarima, s najvećim mogućim trudom i paznjom  |

Vjerojatno, možda mu krov propušta . Inače od crtanja se "umirovio" 2005 (zadnji Mercenario je izašao 2004), i posvetio se kiparenju i izradi modela. Tu i tamo su se pojavljivale njegove fantasy ilustracije, ali moguče je, da se radi o djelima nastalim prije 2005. |

Screenwriter passed away last year Hubert , but he left behind several detailed projects that will be published posthumously. One of those comics is the diptych Ténébreuse, which publishing house Dupuis welcomes to the collection Free Flight . Part 1 will be published in Dutch in October. Ténébreuse is a fairy tale for adults, drawn by Vincent Mallié , known from The Great Dead and albums in the series In Search of the Time Bird - For the Quest .
In the comic, we meet a cash-strapped mercenary knight and a princess trapped in ruin. The knight is sent out as a mercenary to free the princess. Despite his squire's suspicion, the knight struggles through monsters and other peril. But there are legitimate reasons why the princess is locked up. She has dark powers.

Just being able to show a cover of Blacksad is worth a news story. This is it, incorporated into a French-language poster that will soon be seen everywhere with our French-speaking brothers.
Part 6 will be released in October and it is the first part of a diptych of which the sequel is expected in 2022. The diptych is set again in New York and for part 6 the sets alternate between the New York subway and the highest political and financial echelons of the city. Journalist Weekly gets the editorial office of the newspaper What's News a female colleague at and that does not go unnoticed in the macho male bastion of the newspaper editorial office. |

1849. The Mexican army is not prospering. After Texas, they now also lose Alta California to the Americans. In a few months it will become the official state of California, but currently it is a lawless place under military rule. In addition, gold was recently found. Lots of gold. In a matter of weeks, California became the new El Dorado. Peasants left their fields en masse, Europeans emigrated en masse to the solar state to try their luck, but as it usually goes, it is not the prospectors who get rich but who sells them the appropriate material. Señor Gomez takes this one step further. He quickly strings together the shady things. He buys the land from the bankrupt farmers or forces them to sell it. He himself sells them as gold claims to naive immigrants. But his biggest stunt is yet to come. Soon, when California becomes a true constitutional state, its law will be passed, expropriating all the lands of the defeated Mexicans. Gomez and his clique of bankers and landowners are in the front row. Old Don Vega's estate, where the very first gold was found, he had already cunningly made his own. His bloodthirsty right hand, Borrow, has been driving the gold mines with a heavy hand ever since. The farmers/miners grumble and run out of power. They bundle all their hopes, faith and strength in the mythical figure El Zorro. The masked avenger will save them from this new slavery. Graffiti of the well-known fox logo pops up here and there. The tension rises. And suddenly there he is: El Zorro! He challenges Borrow and points his gun at the executioner. It falters. Borrow and his men quickly overpower the masked man and immediately hang him. Nah! El Zorro is dead. But hope doesn't just kill you. The miners gathered one by one chant that they are Zorro. Zorro was dead, but rose again three minutes later.
We got a chill this Dead Poets Society , School of Rock, or Je Suis Charlie moment reading . This remains so strong. We have only completed a few pages and we already know that this is going to be great fun. Pierre Alary ( Silas Corey , SinBad ,...) is fully committed to the legend of this primal superhero. He turns it into a classic western, packed with archetypal characters and duels. Only they are not settled here with a revolver, but with a sword. Yes! The Frenchman also goes to the heart of the great inspiration for Batman. He dumps the foolish soldiers, the naivete — who oh who could be hiding behind this mask? — and other cheap humor. This is hard action. Except for the great wink at the end and a well-thought-out stab at the Church, this Don Vega is a straightforward story. It is well-written, well-told, but most of all beautifully portrayed. Alary created the ideal story for himself to fully express himself graphically. The visually spectacular screen scenes take pages and the sets are extremely neat. Moreover, he plays with colors and rhythm. Yes, this is a real cartoonist. Moreover, Alary surprises us by fishing up the almost forgotten screening technique from old newspaper strips. It immediately gives the comic an emphatically retro feel. Top.
The western Don Vega will not change the comic book world. But it is a fine western that radiates the fun of drawing. |

1449. The Hundred Years' War between France and England is coming to an end and Charles VII is warmly welcomed in liberated Rouen. Yet his thoughts keep drifting to an event eighteen years ago. After all, the English then took Jeanne d'Arc, the virgin of Orleans, prisoner and after a mock trial sentenced her to the stake. Karel wants a review of the process, not only to rehabilitate Jeanne, but also to legitimize his own royal job. After all, no one wants to be associated with a heretical witch, even if it is about unconfirmed suspicions.
The story of the virgin has become a natural national heritage in France and this even led to the canonization of the young woman in 1920. We got to know her in 1981 through the synthesizer hit (tu-du-duuuuuh) of Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (see clip at the bottom of this review) and we still cherish that single. Screenwriter Jérôme Le Gris is doing something very fijns with the famous historical saga. By bombarding the king as the narrator, you get a slightly different view of the story, although the main lines are of course preserved. Initially it took some getting used to the drawings of Ignacio Noé . It tends to accentuate the wrinkles on the faces, so that you sometimes get to see a pieced-together mask, but this can give you a place after a few pages. Whether Alex Callier of Hooverphonic got his inspiration from this comic for his new haircut, we do not know. The fact is that a lot of high-ranking nobles appear to be walking around with the same French Crop.
This album is part of the collection Zij Schreven History and therefore concludes with a clear and clear file. While we found previous parts quite overloaded, this Jeanne d'Arc is well dosed and finely worked out and we consider it the best album of the hope so far. |
